Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke
The Frog, The Snake, and The Snail.
Are not only the Summoned animals of the three legendary sanin but also an important outline for the series altogether. As some of you have already speculated, this pattern already applies to team seven and team Kakashi (Naruto, Sakura, Sai, and Yamato).
So what exactly does the frog, the snake and the slug have to do with the makeup of team seven? This is what Kishimoto said in an interview with Shonen Jump:
“When you talk about ninjas, you invariably talk about frogs. There is a ninja manga whose main character is ‘Hattori-kun,’ who (also a joke in the story) does not like frogs, so this connection between ninjas and frogs is a close one. (In Japanese folklore, frogs are concerted magical animals, and the oil from a frog’s skin is a traditional ointment for wounds and other ailments.) The triad of snake, snail and frog is from Japanese mythology. The snake is more powerful then the frog, the snail is more powerful then the snake, and the frog is more powerful then the snail, Making a paper, rock, scissors” sort of situation. These three are collectively called the ‘Sansukumi’.”
“Sansukumi” is very important term to remember. By the logic of this term, this means that Naruto would always get beaten by Sasuke, while Sasuke would always be beaten by Sakura who would always get beaten by Naruto and so forth. The three characters may coexist with equal levels of strength but their individual strengths will cancel out each other. If this pattern applies to team seven, then the Tsunade Saga outlined the Sansukumi relationship.
The battle of the Legendary 3 Sanins showed Tsunade beating up Orochimaru which could probably apply to Sakura and Sasuke. There’s also a part where Jiraiya treatened to kill Tsunade if she betrayed Konoha. Tsunade’s reaction could hint something about this.
It seems that Kishimoto also hints this when you look a little closer at Sai’s relationship with Naruto and Sakura. Note how Sai toys with Naruto while Sakura manages to punch Sai. In this case, Sai is analogous to Sasuke. (In some ways this can also apply to the structure of the other teams in Konoha like Team Gai with Lee,Tenten, and Neji or some the teams Naruto joins in the filler sagas)
There is however, triangle of admiration going on between the three that would probably affect the relationship between team seven different from the legendary 3 and team Kakashi.
Naruto likes Sakura who likes Sasuke who admires Naruto.
Sounds weird but it shows at times.
